#397 - Life Lessons from Suits: Why Relationships Built on Sex Alone Fail

Oscar Wilde once said, “Life imitates art far more than art imitates life.”

This quote has resonated deeply with me lately. You see, I’ve been binge-watching the TV series Suits, a legal drama that’s as gripping as it is thought-provoking. I’m about halfway through the fourth season, and I’ll admit—I’m hooked. It’s like driving past a car wreck on the highway. Even though you’re uninvolved, you find yourself slowing down to gape at the scene.

Similarly, I keep coming back to Suits to see who lands in trouble next and how they maneuver their way out. The writers have mastered the art of pulling us into the characters’ lives, often through their pain, but occasionally through their fleeting moments of pleasure.

As I’ve been engrossed in the show, I couldn’t help but notice a storyline that perfectly illustrates an important truth about relationships. Enter Louis Litt, a quirky, often blundering character who reminds me of a modern-day Barney Fife. Despite his high intellect and sharp wit, Louis often finds himself in over his head, needing someone to clean up his messes.

In one storyline, Louis starts an affair with Sheila Sazs, a Harvard-educated lawyer responsible for placing top Harvard grads in prestigious law firms. Their chemistry is undeniable—an intense, magnetic pull underpinned by witty banter and a healthy dose of sexual innuendo.

Their whirlwind romance quickly escalates. In just a few episodes, they’re engaged. But as the dust settles and the reality of building a life together sets in, cracks in their relationship begin to surface.

They discover serious differences in their life goals—ones neither of them is willing to compromise on. And just like that, their relationship falls apart, leaving them both heartbroken.

What went wrong?

At its core, their relationship was built on a shaky foundation: pure sexual attraction. It was a connection born out of animal magnetism, not the intellectual, spiritual, and emotional alignment required for a healthy, lasting partnership.

Time and time again, I’ve seen this happen in real life. Two people are drawn together by chemistry, and the physical sparks fly. But when the thrill fades, they’re left with the harsh reality that they lack the deeper connection necessary to sustain a relationship.

Let me be clear: physical attraction is important. It’s one of the four cornerstones of a strong relationship, alongside intellectual, spiritual, and emotional connections. But it can’t stand alone. A relationship built solely on sexual attraction is like building a house on sand. It may look good for a while, but the first storm will bring it crumbling down.

Louis and Sheila’s story is a perfect example of what happens when you skip the hard work of building a solid foundation. They let their hormones take the lead, ignoring the vital conversations and compromises necessary to align their long-term goals.

So, what can we learn from this?

If you’re looking for a healthy, extraordinary relationship, don’t rush. Take the time to cultivate connections on all levels—intellectual, spiritual, emotional, and physical. Ask the tough questions. Share your values, dreams, and expectations. Build something real, something lasting.
